The historic Swan Hotel is fabulously located in the very centre of the city, for a weekend well spent in Wells and its surrounds! We enjoy free time to explore the fine city, with the highlight being a guided tour of Wells Cathedral, described as “unquestionably one of
the most beautiful” and “the most poetic” of English cathedrals, completed with a tasty cream tea.
Wells Weekender & Beyond 2025
PACKAGED ITINERARY
Day 1 Arrival
We arrive at our hotel in time for dinner.
Day 2 Wells
We enjoy a full day in Wells today, the smallest city in England. Small but perfectly formed, Wells offers numerous historical marvels such as the famous 14th century Astronomical Clock, The Bishop’s Palace & Gardens and, of course, the outstanding cathedral. We begin our day at the popular outdoor street market held every Saturday in Wells Market Place, where we can browse a selection of local produce and goods. We spend the afternoon at leisure, exploring the charming city, including the beautiful ‘must-see’ Wells Cathedral, built from around 1175. Here, we enjoy a guided tour, taking in highlights such as the magnificent West Front, the stunning stained glass Jesse Window, the Cathedral Clock and the Scissor Arches. We also enjoy a cream tea during our visit.
Day 3 Glastonbury & Cheddar Gorge
After breakfast, we travel to historic Glastonbury, a town associated with the legend of King Arthur, and famed for its alternative lifestyle and annual music festival. We enjoy a 45-minute guided tour of Glastonbury Abbey, whose buildings, ruins and parkland are said to conceal Arthur’s burial place. After free time for lunch in Glastonbury, we visit Cheddar Gorge, a towering limestone gorge in the Mendip Hills. We have time at leisure to view the cliffs, stalactite-filled caves (charges apply) and other attractions before returning to the hotel this afternoon.
Day 4 Departure
After breakfast, we make our way home.
